PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (KESQ) - Tragedy struck Palm Springs as an explosion resulted in one fatality and left several others injured, causing significant damage to multiple buildings.

Federal agencies, including the FBI and ATF, have swiftly responded to the incident, with Governor Gavin Newsom being updated on the unfolding situation.

The explosion, reported around 11 a.m. at American Reproductive Centers on N Indian Canyon, close to E Tachevah Drive, is under scrutiny, according to city officials.

Palm Springs Police Chief Andy Mills has confirmed the fatalities and suggested a deliberate act of violence may have been responsible for the devastation.

Official Statement by Chief Mills:

“@PSPD is coordinating a comprehensive response to the explosion at 1199 North Indian Canyon. Initial evidence suggests this was an intentional act, with the blast impacting several buildings over a wide area. Assisting us, FBI Assistant Director Davis is on site determining which agency will lead the investigation. Sadly, one life has been lost, though identification is pending. Residents who discover potential evidence are urged to leave it untouched and contact authorities via the non-emergency line for collection. Ensuring community safety is our primary focus. We appreciate your patience as this seems to be an isolated incident.”

In a report from ABC7 Los Angeles, citing unnamed law enforcement, it’s claimed that the deceased suspected perpetrator was behind the blast, with five additional injuries reported.

Dr. Maher Abdallah, head of the clinic, conveyed via social media that, while the office was damaged, the laboratory remains intact. Thankfully, no clinic staff were harmed.

Abdallah clarified, “The explosion involved a vehicle in a lot nearby.”

The FBI has reinforced their cooperative efforts with local police and fire teams at the explosion’s site on N. Indian Canyon Drive, dispatching investigators, bomb techs, and an evidence team. They urge the public to adhere to local authority guidelines for safety.

Nicole Lozano, spokeswoman for the ATF in Los Angeles, confirmed that ATF agents are en route, urging against speculation until more information becomes clear.

Residents across the area reported hearing the blast, leading authorities to implore the public to steer clear, allowing emergency personnel space to address the situation.

User-submitted images displayed significant damage to several structures including Desert Regional Medical Center, Denny’s, and Palm Springs Liquor.

As information remains scant, inquiries have been directed to Palm Springs Fire and Police departments, with on-site News Channel 3 contributors gathering updates.

Desert Regional Medical Center (DRCM) officials shared a statement:

“An explosion occurred at a neighboring office on Saturday morning close to Desert Regional Medical Center. We are assisting police in investigating the cause while keeping our emergency services and full operations running. We request visitors temporarily avoid the premises as police manage the restricted access on the road. While some windows in an action-oriented medical office facing the explosion were damaged, hospital functions continue unimpaired.”

Governor Gavin Newsom’s office confirmed he received an update, issuing a statement:

“I’ve been briefed regarding the explosion near a fertility clinic in Palm Springs. Jen and I hold in our hearts all those affected. Our state is actively collaborating with local and federal authorities in the ongoing investigation. Please avoid the area.
