President Donald Trump signed executive orders on Thursday, postponing for almost a month tariffs on all goods from Mexico and Canada included in the USMCA free trade agreement. This decision marks a significant reconsideration of the administration’s key economic strategy, which has previously caused market unrest, affecting businesses and consumers alike.

These executive orders were issued following a discussion Trump had with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, along with negotiations between Canadian representatives and officials from Trump’s administration.

“After speaking with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico, I have agreed that Mexico will not need to pay tariffs on anything included under the USMCA Agreement,” Trump announced on Truth Social Thursday, after his phone conversation with the Mexican leader. He mentioned that the imposition of tariffs would be postponed until April 2. The USMCA, which stands for the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, was brokered by Trump during his first term, creating a free trade zone among the three North American countries.
