Shortly after Dr. Oz took the oath of office as the new head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on April 18, an unexpected interruption occurred, causing reporters to be suddenly ushered out of the Oval Office.
The ceremony, conducted by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was taking place in the White House’s Oval Office. During President Trump’s remarks on Dr. Oz’s appointment, he digressed into a discussion about nuclear weapons, warning those present of the “great danger” posed if Iran were to acquire them. Amidst this, there are reports of someone collapsing.
Video footage captures journalists reacting to the disruption while one of Dr. Oz’s daughters is heard saying, “Philo fainted, Philo fainted. Dad, go!” Dr. Oz promptly attended to his granddaughter, 11-year-old Philomena, before resuming his place beside the president. Staff members quickly prompted journalists and onlookers to leave, instructing, “Everybody out!” and “Get out right now.” Eventually, the footage shows Daphne and Oliver Oz assisting Philomena out of the room, where she seemed unwell. Following the incident, a White House spokesperson informed PEOPLE, “A minor family member fainted during Dr. Oz’s swearing-in ceremony in the Oval Office. We are happy to say she is okay.”
