Eugene is more than just Gail’s husband; his story is set to intrigue viewers in Season 2. While we meet new characters such as Firefly survivor Abby and Joel’s therapist Gail, Eugene’s presence looms despite his absence, having died not long ago. Although we never meet him, his influence on the story remains significant.

So, what do we learn about Eugene? During Joel’s therapy session with Gail, he pays her with marijuana, which she dismisses as “shake and stems.” To Joel’s comment about the harsh winter, she remarks, “That never stopped Eugene. January, February. That man would grow buds the size of pine cones.”

Later, when Joel comments on her choice of whiskey, she shares that she feels somber, marking her first birthday without Eugene in 41 years. Her sorrow hints at the profound impact of his absence.

Joel remains silent, visibly uneasy, and it’s revealed why as the session progresses. Gail confronts him, saying, “You shot and killed my husband […] you killed Eugene. And I resent you for it. No. Maybe a little more than that. I hate you for it. I hate you for it. And yes, I know you had no choice. I know that. I know I should forgive you. Well, I’ve tried, and I can’t. Because of how you did it. And looking at your face, sitting in our home, makes me so angry.”

The circumstances surrounding Eugene’s death are shrouded in mystery. Gail’s birthday scenario indicates Joel killed Eugene sometime in the past year. The implication is Eugene may have been infected, given Gail’s acknowledgment that Joel “had no choice,” and his continued acceptance within the community. Yet, the true enigma lies in Gail’s loathing of Joel’s method. Did Joel act before Eugene’s fate was certain? Was it the cold, detached manner Joel is known for? The layers to this story suggest we haven’t heard the last of Eugene’s tale.
