United Independent School District (United ISD) is thrilled to announce that 203 high school students have earned the esteemed 2024-25 National Recognition from the College Board. This accolade celebrates academically distinguished Hispanic/Latino, African American/Black, first-generation, and Indigenous students, providing a significant boost to their academic journeys.

In its fifth year, the National Recognition Program had over 180,000 students from all 50 states eligible to apply this year, with 90,000 earning honors. This underscores a dedication to educational diversity and support for underrepresented groups.

To earn this prestigious recognition, students had to meet specific criteria showcasing their academic prowess. Juniors needed to be in the top 10% of PSAT 10 and PSAT/NMSQT test-takers in their state for their award program or score 3 or higher on at least two different Advanced Placement (AP) Exams by the end of 10th grade. They also had to maintain a GPA of 3.3 (87-89%) or higher and identify as a member of the specified underrepresented groups.

Sophomores faced similar benchmarks, with adjustments for the testing years applicable to their PSAT and AP Exams. Such rigorous criteria guarantee that the award acknowledges students who exemplify dedication and academic excellence.

Reflecting on their success, Mario Rosales, the United ISD Director of Advanced Academics, expressed, “On behalf of our Board of Trustees, congratulations to these outstanding high school students for surpassing their academic ambitions. May they continue to inspire their peers, and we wish them ongoing success in their futures.” His remarks capture the pride felt within the district over their students’ achievements.

The National Recognition Programs are not solely about awards; they aim to dismantle systemic barriers that underrepresented students face in pursuing higher education. Arielle Ford, Director of Strategic Engagement and Programs at the College Board, highlighted, “The National Recognition Programs were developed to address systemic obstacles hindering underrepresented students’ access to higher education.” This highlights the College Board’s mission to foster access and equity in higher education.

These initiatives trace back 40 years to the National Hispanic Recognition Program, initially focusing on enhancing opportunities for high-achieving Latino students. The program’s success prompted the College Board to expand its scope in 2019, adding African American Recognition, Indigenous Recognition, and Rural/Small Town Recognition. This growth aligns with continuous efforts to promote inclusivity and opportunity in education.

Ford stressed, “This initiative centers on building connections between students and higher education institutions. It raises awareness and exposes students to schools they might not have known. We aim for these programs to create pathways to college for underrepresented students and for awardees to consider a diverse array of colleges.” This dedication to enhancing students’ higher education paths is crucial to the programs’ success.

Additionally, awardees can receive personalized outreach from colleges by opting into the Student Search Service. This initiative allows colleges to identify awardees and engage them with tailored communication about college applications and scholarships fitting their profiles. As outlined, this service can significantly bolster students’ chances of securing college admission and financial aid.

The honored students from United ISD represent several high schools, with Alexander High School boasting a significant number of awardees. Each student symbolizes academic excellence and the diverse makeup of the district’s student body. Other prominent high schools include L.B. Johnson High School, United High School, and United South High School.

As United ISD promotes an environment conducive to academic achievement, recognizing these students honors their commitment and hard work throughout their educational journeys. This accolade not only represents a proud moment for students and their families but also enhances United ISD’s reputation as a provider of high-quality education and equal opportunities.
