On Monday, U.S. stocks took a significant hit as selling intensified by mid-morning. Investors were anxious about the state of the U.S. economy and braced themselves for a flood of economic updates, especially a critical inflation report amidst renewed fears over its rise under the unpredictable trade policies of President Trump. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped roughly 1%, and the S&P 500 declined about 2% after the index experienced its worst week since September. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq dropped more than 3%, with notable losses in the so-called “Magnificent Seven” tech stocks. All three major indexes seemed poised to extend losses exceeding 2% from last week.

March has been a tough month for the markets as concerns about the U.S. economy’s health persist. These apprehensions are further compounded by Trump’s ongoing trade tensions, particularly the tariff discussions between the U.S., Mexico, and Canada dominating news cycles. In a Sunday appearance on Fox News, Trump addressed recession fears, characterizing the economic landscape as “a period of transition.” Simultaneously, Mark Carney is preparing to become Canada’s new prime minister following his election as the Liberal Party leader. Carney has indicated that he intends to adopt a firm stance in tariff discussions. The political uncertainties are likely to linger this week, with significant economic data potentially influencing the markets.

Investors are set to closely monitor updates on inflation, with the February Consumer Price Index expected on Wednesday, followed by the Producer Price Index on Thursday. On Monday, the Fed will release its survey of consumer inflation expectations, and the week will wrap up with the University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment report on Friday. This week, corporate earnings reports are relatively sparse. Nonetheless, Oracle is scheduled to report on Monday, and Adobe will reveal their results on Wednesday.
