The Associated Press reported that the White House prevented its journalists from covering an official event on Tuesday due to their refusal to refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. AP Executive Editor Julie Pace revealed that the White House had denied the agency’s journalists attendance at President Trump’s signing of a new executive order because they did not comply with his preferred term for the body of water.

Julie Pace expressed concern in a statement on the AP’s website, noting, “It’s troubling that the Trump administration would retaliate against the AP for maintaining its journalistic independence.” She added, “Restricting our access to the Oval Office based on the content of our reporting not only greatly limits public access to independent news, but it also clearly infringes upon the First Amendment.”
