In what seemed to be a major disruption for numerous X users, the social networking platform, owned by Elon Musk, encountered technical difficulties and displayed error messages on Friday. According to Downdetector.com, a website that monitors outages, over 53,000 complaints regarding X were logged by 2:46 p.m. ET on Thursday. More than half (54%) of these reports highlighted issues accessing the X app, while other users reported problems reaching the site. On the website, visitors were greeted with the message “Something went wrong. Try reloading” when attempting to view posts.

The issues seemed to have been resolved in under thirty minutes. X, previously known as Twitter, last faced a series of outages on March 10, which Musk attributed to “a massive cyberattack” on the platform. Prior to this, the most significant outage occurred in August 2024, when 66% of users experienced troubles with the app, website, and server connectivity. Other notable incidents include the disruption of essential features in July 2023 and the March 2024 crash during Ron DeSantis’ Twitter Spaces live audio event, coinciding with his official presidential candidacy announcement.

Musk purchased Twitter in October 2022 for $44 billion and subsequently reduced its workforce by about 80%. In May 2024, the site was rebranded to X.com, retiring the twitter.com domain. In July 2023, Musk, who also leads Tesla and SpaceX, rebranded Twitter as X.
