Will the Giants Revamp Their Cornerback Lineup Through Free Agency?

The New York Giants’ quest for a new starting quarterback may dominate the headlines this offseason, but General Manager Joe Schoen has more on his plate. Adding a standout outside cornerback is equally pressing for the team’s future success.

While potential game-changer Travis Hunter could join the Giants in the 2025 NFL Draft, addressing the cornerback position in the immediate free agency period is critical.

The market is flooded with promising talents like D.J. Reed, Charvarius Ward, Carlton Davis, and Byron Murphy, all capable of stepping into the No. 1 role on the depth chart.

Despite the big names, Pro Football Focus highlights a more budget-friendly choice: 26-year-old Chargers cornerback Kristian Fulton.

Last season, Fulton showcased his skills, excelling in both coverage and supporting the run. His previous experience with Giants defensive coordinator Shane Bowen—having played three seasons under his system with the Titans—could make him an ideal match.

Analyzing Fulton’s potential fit, PFF analyst Bradley Locker noted, “In Cover 3 setups, Fulton’s 44.6 passer rating allowed was the eighth-best among qualifiers.”

Is Kristian Fulton a Fit for the Giants?

As a former second-round pick, Fulton delivered one interception, 51 tackles, and seven pass breakups with the Chargers in 2024.

His know-how of Bowen’s system aligns well with the Giants’ needs, but his 67.9 PFF coverage grade leaves some doubts about his ability to handle elite wide receivers as a top cornerback.

Though Fulton, an LSU national champion, boasts skills and experience that add to the Giants’ secondary, his potential might be capped.

A five-year professional track record indicates Fulton isn’t the dominant coverage corner the Giants lack. Nonetheless, his prowess in disrupting the run game stands out, especially for a defense that faltered in this area last season.

Stacking up at cornerback this year is a smart move. With unrestricted free agent Adoree’ Jackson likely leaving and Deonte Banks facing challenges, the Giants need depth.

Rookie Dru Phillips had a solid year in the slot, and Fulton’s addition would bolster the lineup’s depth.

On top of that, New York must secure a game-changing cornerback to anchor the secondary. If Schoen lands such a player this spring, the Giants could transform a previously weak area into one of their strengths.
