As the NCAA Tournament approaches, the Wisconsin men’s basketball team is well-positioned to secure a top-four seed when pairings are announced next Sunday. Yet, despite this comfortable standing, the stakes have risen unexpectedly for UW’s final regular-season clash.
To ensure additional rest before their opening game in the Big Ten tournament in Indianapolis, the Badgers (23-7 overall, 13-6 in the Big Ten) must defeat Penn State (15-15, 5-14) at the Kohl Center this Saturday afternoon.
Thanks to Purdue’s defeat against Illinois on Friday night, a victory over the Nittany Lions would guarantee Wisconsin a double-bye, which is awarded to the top four teams in the regular season standings.
Eliminated from participating in the Big Ten tournament, Penn State is out of the running for a top-15 finish. The Nittany Lions have never emerged victorious at the Kohl Center and last tasted victory in Madison back in 1995.
Although the Badgers’ offensive efficiency has slightly waned recently, this game promises a high-scoring affair. Wisconsin maintains an average of over 80 points per game, while the Nittany Lions are close behind, averaging 78.7 and having scored 80 or more points in 15 games this season.
Stay tuned for updates, including the March 8 game against Penn State at noon.
