A micromoon is set to make its appearance this Saturday night, casting a slightly smaller and dimmer glow across the sky. Catching this subtle change with the naked eye may prove challenging.

Astrophysicist Alain Brizard from Saint Michael’s College in Vermont describes it as a “very subtle difference.” This phenomenon occurs when the moon reaches its farthest point from Earth, in contrast to a supermoon when the moon draws nearer and appears larger.

For a chance to spot this micromoon, head outdoors and find a spot with an unobstructed view of the sky.

Micromoons and supermoons occur several times a year, aligning with the phases of the moon’s orbit. Look out for another micromoon in May, and mark your calendars for supermoons scheduled for October, November, and December.

Earlier this year, in March, a total eclipse gave the moon a stunning coppery red hue, offering a different kind of lunar spectacle.
