Yankees Experience Unique Twist as "Visitors" in Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. – In an intriguing scenario, the New York Yankees find themselves as visitors in their own spring training residence for the very first time.

Returning to Steinbrenner Field, the Yankees face off against the Tampa Bay Rays in a four-game series. Typically their AL East competitors, the Rays now call the Yankees’ ballpark home this season after unforeseen circumstances displaced them.

“Running into Rays manager Kevin Cash and some of their players was interesting,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone mentioned ahead of Thursday night’s game. “While surreal might not be the exact word, it definitely feels a bit strange. Once the game kicks off and we absorb the atmosphere, everything becomes real despite the oddity.”

The Rays were compelled to find a temporary home after Hurricane Milton severely damaged the roof at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg on October 9. Faced with an unrepairable venue, they struck a deal with the Yankees to share their 11,026-capacity spring training site in Tampa.

“This decision was made in the spirit of baseball and in support of the Rays,” Boone explained. “Though our organizations compete fiercely, it’s moments like these—responding to such a crisis—where coming together shows the right thing to do.”

This arrangement has meant a few adjustments for the Yankees, who must now navigate a tighter clubhouse as the Rays enjoy the upgraded facilities. The visiting team’s dining area, for instance, doubles as the media’s café during spring training events.

Last winter saw the Yankees transforming the clubhouse into an expansive 50,000-square-foot area, including a weight room with panoramic windows, indoor and outdoor relaxation zones, a variety of player amenities, and state-of-the-art training equipment. This includes a ping-pong table, barbershop, comprehensive therapy centers, and entertainment setups at every turn.

“It’s a phenomenal facility for spring training,” Boone said proudly. “This year, the players really made the most of it. However, with the regular season in full swing, our focus has shifted, and we embrace the current circumstances.”

Setting a friendly tone, Boone had previously intended to leave Rays manager Kevin Cash a bottle of tequila alongside a farewell note. Although initially forgotten, Boone ensured the gift arrived before their latest matchup.

“A little welcome-home offering,” Boone remarked.

And what kind of tequila, you might ask?

“Only the best,” Boone replied with a grin.
