Zelle is now operational again following a disruption that impacted the customers of several banks. This interruption was attributed to an external issue, as announced by the popular peer-to-peer payment platform. Data from DownDetector, a site where users report service outages, indicated a surge in complaints about payment issues beginning Friday morning, which began to ease off slightly by the afternoon. A representative from Zelle confirmed these issues in a statement to CNN, pinpointing the source of the problem to services provided by Fiserv, a major payment processing firm supporting a number of banks.

In a statement to CNN, a Fiserv spokesman explained, “Earlier today, we encountered an internal problem that temporarily affected our services.” He assured that the issue has been addressed and efforts are underway to clear the backlog. Fiserv clarified that this outage wasn’t due to any cyberattack and they’re taking measures to avoid future occurrences. Meanwhile, a Zelle representative mentioned collaborations with their partners to rectify the situation. “Zelle users might notice transactions labeled as ‘payment pending’ during this period,” the representative stated. Zelle has not specified which banks were affected, though DownDetector users noted problems with Truist and Navy Federal Credit Union.

One disgruntled Truist customer expressed frustration on DownDetector, noting their rent payment has been stuck since Thursday evening. “It feels like my money is just floating and nobody’s taking any responsibility!” the user lamented. Numerous bank representatives redirected inquiries to Zelle. Nonetheless, Bank of America’s spokesman, Matthew Card, acknowledged some Zelle-related glitches for their clients. “Earlier today, several clients faced delays in sending and receiving specific payments,” Card explained to CNN, attributing it to a vendor issue affecting multiple banks, which has now been sorted out.

Zelle remains a favored platform in the US for quickly transferring billions of dollars daily. It’s operated by Early Warning Services (EWS), co-owned by major banks such as JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo.
