Miguel Ángel Russo has set clear objectives for his Boca Juniors squad ahead of their pivotal matchup against Bayern Munich, which kicked off its Club World Cup campaign with a formidable ten-goal performance.
“We must start with eleven players and end with eleven,” declared the Argentine coach on the eve of the Group C second round.
He further emphasized the need to play “with head and heart, always.”
Boca started with a 2-2 draw against Benfica, missing out on a win after squandering a two-goal lead within the first 30 minutes. They had to settle for a draw and lamented finishing the match a man down after defender Jorge Figal was sent off for a foul on Florentino Luis.
Additionally, Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera was also sent off from the bench due to his vehement protests against Mexican referee César Ramos. FIFA has yet to confirm whether both players will serve suspensions extending beyond the automatic one-game ban, with Argentine media speculating they might face a four-game suspension.
“There were positives and areas to improve, as in any match,” Russo reflected. “But we’re in a good place. We showed mental strength, which was crucial. Maintaining that understanding of how these games should be played is the hardest part. We got that the other day.”
Boca will once again play at the Hard Rock Stadium, feeling at home with the passionate support of their fans who filled the stands during the recent match. Their unwavering support will be crucial as they face the formidable Bundesliga champions.
Bayern showed no mercy against Auckland City, crushing the Oceania representatives 10-0. Jamal Musiala, returning from injury, scored a second-half hat-trick. However, English striker Harry Kane, who was the top scorer in Germany with 26 goals, didn’t find the back of the net.
“We must be at 100% like the other day, and should the game swing in our favor, we must eliminate the small details to ensure a positive result doesn’t slip away,” stated Lautaro Blanco, the left-back who assisted Miguel Merentiel’s goal against Benfica.
“They are a top-level opponent globally, but we are confident,” Blanco added. “Boca shouldn’t envy any other team in the world. Footballing realities exist, but with the team’s commitment, everything balances out, and good results are possible.”
Meanwhile, Bayern is cautious not to underestimate the Argentine squad.
“European teams are naturally the main contenders, but South American teams should not be underestimated either,” cautioned goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
Russo stressed the importance of not being intimidated.
“It’s hard to say if they’re unbeatable,” the 69-year-old coach noted. “They are a significant team, but they leave spaces. This is football, and there are different ways to view it. Competing is key.”
