Caitlin Clark made a triumphant return to basketball on Saturday, energizing the court after a nearly three-week hiatus due to a quad injury. Her explosive first-half performance, highlighted by a career-high-tying seven three-point shots, propelled the Indiana Fever to a 102-88 victory over the previously unbeaten New York Liberty, ending their 9-0 opening streak.

Clark was unstoppable from the start, putting up 25 points and sinking six threes in the initial two quarters, just shy of her personal best. By the game’s end, she amassed 32 points, along with eight rebounds and nine assists. Despite playing without star defender Jonquel Jones, sidelined with an ankle injury, the Liberty initially gained an advantage with an 11-0 surge midway through the opening quarter. However, Clark soon hit her stride, dazzling with three consecutive three-pointers in just 30 seconds, lifting the Fever to a second-quarter lead. Even Liberty’s standout player, Breanna Stewart, couldn’t help but grin as Clark netted her fifth three-pointer by halftime, where Indiana led 53-50.

Although the Fever stumbled at the start of the second half, allowing New York to briefly regain control, Indiana hit back with a dominant 19-point streak in the third quarter. Although Sabrina Ionescu scored a game-high 34 points to narrow the gap before the third quarter concluded, New York’s offense froze in the fourth quarter, ultimately sealing the Fever’s 14-point triumph. As Clark eased up in the second half, teammate Kelsey Mitchell took charge, finishing with 22 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter, ensuring Indiana’s victory.

Typically clocking in 35 minutes on the court, Clark limited her game time to just over 31 minutes, taking moments to rest. While she was hesitant to agree to a minutes restriction beforehand, it might take a few more games for her to reach peak condition. Nonetheless, her return electrified the home crowd, including an enthusiastic shout-out from LeBron James on social media, who celebrated her comeback with a post: “The CC EFFECT!! WELCOME BACK! You were missed!” This game marked the Fever’s first 100-point tally of the season and the highest point count conceded by New York to date. With a 5-5 record, this victory suggests a pivotal change for the Fever, glad to have Clark back in action.
