SALT LAKE CITY — A shooting left one person critically injured during a Saturday night protest as demonstrators made their way through downtown Salt Lake City for a “No Kings” rally. The incident has led to the arrest of three individuals, according to police reports.
Authorities from the Salt Lake City Police Department confirmed that the wounded individual was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
An initial suspect was apprehended by police officers near 200 East 100 South almost immediately after the shooting. Later in the evening, two additional suspects were detained. While all three had participated in the protest to some extent, police have not yet identified a motive for the shooting.
Officials have reassured the public that there is no ongoing threat to the community.
The situation unfolded shortly after 8 p.m. when the march neared the intersection of 200 South and State Street. Amidst chaos, people were seen fleeing as officers with drawn weapons approached the first suspect standing by a building.
FOX 13 News reported that the initial individual taken into custody had blood on his hands. After being detained, he was escorted into an ambulance with injuries that have not been specified.
Governor Spencer Cox publicly addressed the incident via social media, stating, “The shooting at tonight’s protest in Salt Lake City is a deeply troubling act of violence and has no place in our public square.”
Similarly, Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall expressed her concerns about the unrest. “The violence we’ve seen today in Salt Lake City and elsewhere in the country is horrific—it’s just not who we are. We deserve to feel safe, especially when exercising our First Amendment rights,” she stated. “Thank you to the Salt Lake City Police Department for their quick action tonight to protect lives and support those marching peacefully. My heart is with you, SLC.
“We’ll get through this.”
The protest, part of a larger day of demonstrations involving over 10,000 participants across the state, had otherwise been peaceful with no reported disturbances until the shooting in Salt Lake City on Saturday night.
