Casper Ruud, a three-time Grand Slam finalist and former world No. 2, captured the most significant title of his career on Sunday. He overcame Jack Draper in a thrilling match, winning 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 in the Mutua Madrid Open final.
This triumph is Ruud’s maiden ATP Masters 1000 title, marking a historic moment as he becomes the first Norwegian to achieve this milestone. It’s his largest victory since clinching the trophy in Geneva last year.
Speaking about his breakthrough win, Ruud expressed, “It’s been a long time coming, and this is one of my biggest dreams since childhood. Achieving it is an incredible feeling, especially with the performance I delivered today. The match was fantastic.
“I knew Jack has been in phenomenal form all season and during this tournament. To avoid being outplayed, I had to bring my very best form. Thankfully, I played exceptionally well…
“This win is a tremendous boost for me, and I hope to maintain this momentum.
Prior to this match, Ruud was already recognized as the ATP Tour’s leading clay-court player, boasting more wins (124), finals (17), and titles (11) on this surface since the beginning of the 2020 season. With his victory over Draper, he has only solidified his supremacy on clay, claiming 12 out of his 13 career titles on this challenging terrain.
In light of this achievement, the two-time Roland Garros finalist is set to climb back into the ATP’s Top 10 rankings on Monday, reaching world No. 7. Currently ranked No. 15 due to losing ground after failing to defend his Monte Carlo final points from last year, his new standing reflects his ongoing success.
