On June 19, 1865, a Union general made a historic announcement to enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, declaring their freedom—an announcement that came two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation had officially been decreed. Although Juneteenth had long been a celebrated holiday in Texas and recognized in several other regions for many years, it wasn’t until 2021 that it received federal recognition as a holiday. This milestone was largely due to the dedication of activists like 94-year-old Opal Lee.
