Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem experienced a theft while dining in a downtown Washington, DC, restaurant on Sunday night, she confirmed on Monday.

When asked about the incident during the White House Easter Egg Roll, Noem admitted the issue remains unresolved.

Security camera reviews by the Secret Service, who are responsible for Noem’s protection, revealed a White male suspect wearing a medical mask stealing her bag and then leaving the Capital Burger restaurant, according to a law enforcement source.

The thief made off with Noem’s driver’s license, medication, apartment keys, passport, DHS access badge, makeup bag, blank checks, and approximately $3,000 in cash.

The Secret Service has initiated an investigation to monitor any use of Noem’s stolen financial items, the source added.

“Her entire family, including children and grandchildren, were in town; she was using the money to treat them to dinner, activities, and Easter gifts,” a DHS spokesperson explained.

Law enforcement specialists expressed concerns about how the thief managed to get so close to a high-ranking official and escape with her belongings, calling it a potential security lapse.

“This is a security breach with significant implications, requiring immediate review by the Secret Service, DHS, and other law enforcement agencies,” remarked Jonathan Wackrow, a CNN analyst and former Secret Service agent.

Wackrow suggested that if necessary, the Secret Service might need to modify their operational approaches for handling personal events like these moving forward, speaking to Kaitlan Collins on CNN’s “The Source.”

He emphasized that Noem remains at an elevated risk for targeted attacks from both foreign and domestic entities, given her public profile and symbolic status.
