Eighty years after the fall of Nazi Germany, Europe finds itself navigating the lingering shadows of past tyrannies while grappling with President Trump’s antagonism. Just last year, a poignant ceremony unfolded on the shores of Normandy, commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day. It was a tribute to the steadfast alliance between the United States and Europe, honoring their unified determination to confront significant challenges together and stand in defense of Ukraine.

For President Biden, the “tyrant” in question is Russia’s President Vladimir V. Putin. Despite being deemed responsible for instigating the conflict in Ukraine, President Trump, with his “America-first” approach, seems to have soft-pedaled Putin’s actions, maintaining a lenient stance towards authoritarian figures.
