On Tuesday, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was rushed to a hospital in Washington, DC, following an allergic reaction, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
“Secretary Noem experienced an allergic reaction today. She was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure. She is conscious and on the mend,” reported DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin.
CNN witnessed several Secret Service agents stationed at various entrances to the hospital’s emergency room where the secretary was being treated.
Noem, 53, who previously held the position of governor of South Dakota and served as a representative for the state in Congress, was selected by President Donald Trump to be his Homeland Security secretary shortly after he won his second term. This appointment made her a pivotal figure in his cabinet, especially with immigration as a key focus of his campaign. The Senate confirmed her nomination in late January.
Upon his return to office, Trump has been adamant about intensifying measures against immigration—from deploying military forces to the border to invoking wartime powers for swift deportations of undocumented immigrants—and Noem has been actively implementing this agenda.
Additionally, Noem oversees the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and has advocated for its dissolution, often labeling it as ineffective and superfluous. Last week, Trump announced his intention to dismantle FEMA following the end of this year’s hurricane season.
