Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano has announced that the team’s line-up will see some alterations for the upcoming match against FC Dallas on Sunday afternoon at Chase Stadium. This decision comes in light of the tight 72-hour turnaround following their Concacaf Champions Cup (CCC) semifinal first leg against the Vancouver Whitecaps.

There is a possibility that stars Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez might play a reduced role in this game. Their absence was noted during the initial 15 minutes of Friday’s media-accessible training session. Additionally, starting goalkeeper Oscar Ustari did not train with the squad, and midfielder Sergio Busquets was seen working individually with a member of the coaching staff.

Playing every three days is one thing, which most of our players can manage,” Mascherano remarked. “However, having less than 72 hours between matches is another matter entirely. We wrapped up our game late Thursday night in Miami, and then, we’re scheduled to play again on Sunday at 5 p.m.”

Mascherano emphasized the challenge, pointing out that it’s not even a full 72 hours, considering a 6-hour journey. “This isn’t like our previous game against Toronto,” he pointed out, where the team had a more relaxed timeline, playing LAFC on a Wednesday, and then on Sunday, and again the following Wednesday. “So, adjustments will be necessary.”

After a morning rest period following their recent effort, Mascherano confirmed, “We will likely make changes to the team. Prioritizing the next match is paramount, especially if we aim to rebound from defeat with a victory.”

Inter Miami is recovering from a 2-0 loss against the Whitecaps, compelling them to score at least two goals in the second leg set for Wednesday night at Chase Stadium. Mascherano noted that Messi experienced some fatigue, which could be linked to playing on a synthetic field surface.

“Messi concluded the game in good condition, though he was visibly tired. Playing on synthetic grass can indeed exacerbate fatigue due to its distinctive surface,” the coach said.

Previously, Mascherano described the semifinal clash with the Whitecaps as one of the club’s most crucial games, equating it to a final in terms of significance. Now, while they continue to keep the CCC in sight, the immediate focus shifts to FC Dallas.

“We’ll now prepare for our match against FC Dallas, and with minimal time before kickoff,” Mascherano stated. “Our focus is on Dallas, maintaining our strong standing in MLS, and ensuring we continue our momentum.”
