CINCINNATI (WXIX) - Around 60 Kroger stores are set to close across the country within the next year and a half.

The Cincinnati-based grocery chain revealed this plan in a first-quarter sales report submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), citing a $100 million impairment charge due to the “planned closures,” as outlined in the report.

The full statement from the report reads:

Kroger acknowledged a $100 million impairment charge in the first quarter due to the planned closure of roughly 60 stores over the coming 18 months. These closures are anticipated to bring a small financial gain, which Kroger intends to reinvest into enhancing the customer experience, ensuring no impact on the year-end guidance. The company is committed to offering positions at other locations to all employees of the affected stores.

FOX19 NOW in Cincinnati contacted Kroger for more information about the store closures. A company spokesperson responded, “We do not anticipate any closures in the Cincinnati-Dayton region.”

Kroger operates about 1,239 stores across 16 states, including Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. The company has not specified which locations are closing or the reasons behind selecting these 60 stores. In the first quarter of 2025, Kroger’s sales without fuel and pharmacy sales were $200 million less than the previous year, though overall sales rose by 3.7%.
