Mariners and Cubs: A Summertime Baseball Tradition

Mariners and Cubs: A Summertime Baseball Tradition

Kyle Tucker gets the rare opportunity to irritate me while donning a fresh outfit. The Mariners finally engage in one of my cherished baseball traditions: the Cubs Friday Matinee. There’s something uniquely summery about it. Though the 11:20 PT start might be inconvenient for those on the West Coast, I love how this Chicago tradition inspires the city to start the weekend early when the sun is shining. The Cubs truly pioneered the concept of Summer Fridays.

George Kirby takes the mound for Seattle, looking to recover from his highly unusual three-walk performance last Saturday. As they face the Cubs, fans get to see familiar face Matthew Boyd. While Boyd played a minor role on the 2022 team, his PNW roots made his post-clinch celebration interview particularly touching. Watching him get emotional while Ty France gleefully douses someone with beer in the background was the perfect snapshot of the complex feelings of the day.

With a left-hander starting for the Mariners, Luke Raley isn’t in the initial lineup, despite rejoining the team. In a similar fashion, Mitch Garver will serve as DH, even as we’ve seen Jorge Polanco frequently bat right-handed lately.
