Even with their best efforts, the PGA Tour couldn’t dodge Mother Nature’s curveball on Sunday in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

Television schedules and tee times had been moved up for the concluding round, but nevertheless, play was halted at 1:15 p.m. EDT due to weather. After a lengthy four-hour pause, the game picked up again. Although they managed to complete regulation play, a playoff will be necessary to crown the 51st winner of The Players Championship.

Both Rory McIlroy, who shot a 68, and J.J. Spaun, who carded a 72, ended the 72-hole competition locked at 12 under par. Unfortunately, with daylight dwindling, there was insufficient time Sunday evening to conduct the planned three-hole aggregate playoff.

The contest will resume at 9 a.m. EDT, with live broadcasts on Golf Channel, Peacock, and the NBC Sports app. “Live From The Players” will immediately follow on Golf Channel and the app, ensuring fans won’t miss a moment.

The official playoff format is set as follows:

  • A three-hole aggregate playoff covering holes 16, 17, and 18;
  • Should there still be a tie, it will proceed to sudden death starting at the par-3 17th and, if necessary, continue to the par-4 18th;
  • If needed, sudden death will carry on in the order of holes 16, 17, and 18.
