Rayados Triumph Over Toluca in Thrilling Quarterfinal

Rayados showcased an impressive performance on the field, securing a 3-2 victory over Toluca in the first leg of the Clausura 2025 quarterfinals. The decisive match is now set for next Saturday at the Nemesio Díez Stadium, where the outcome will be sealed.

The team from Monterrey had a strong start, demonstrating cohesive teamwork against a Toluca squad that struggled but eventually managed to hold its ground. Despite dominating possession, Monterrey had difficulty converting their chances into tangible threats against the goal defended by Pau López, as the Red Devils remained steadfast in their defense.

Over time, Antonio Mohamed’s side leveled the playing field. Jesús Gallardo, receiving the ball on the left flank, sent a cross aimed to disrupt Toluca’s defense. Victor Guzmán inadvertently redirected the ball into his own net, gifting Rayados a 1-0 lead for the visitors.

The match maintained a lively pace, with the home team striving to respond, though Toluca appeared the more menacing near the opponent’s goal. Nonetheless, Rayados capitalized on one of their rare clear chances to equalize. Nelson Deossa received the ball outside the box and unleashed a powerful, unstoppable shot past Pau López to level the score at 1-1 at the 43rd-minute mark.

Monterrey continued their momentum into the second half, reaping rewards at the 49th minute when Sergio Canales received the ball in the area and made no mistake, finding the back of the net for a 2-1 lead.

The team from the State of Mexico nearly drew level when Jesús Angulo received a pass inside the penalty area, only to send his shot over the crossbar, missing the opportunity to even the score.

Rayados seized another defensive blunder by Jesús Gallardo to widen their lead. The Toluca defender’s attempt to pass back to his goalkeeper was intercepted by Germán Berterame, who outpaced Pau López and scored to cement a 3-1 lead at the 68th minute.

Antonio Mohamed’s squad fought hard to respond, managing to narrow the gap at 81 minutes when Luan García headed home from a free-kick to make it 3-2.

Despite mounting pressure and creating chances in the dying moments, the team from Toluca couldn’t alter the scoreline further. Thus, Rayados claimed victory, securing an edge as they head towards the semifinals.
