At least six individuals were wounded on Thursday as a result of a shooting at Florida State University, according to Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare. The hospital confirmed it was tending to those affected from the campus incident.

Hospital officials stated that among the injured, one person is in critical condition while five others are in serious condition.

A suspect has been apprehended following the reported shooting at Florida State University. This information comes from two law enforcement sources who are well-versed in the situation.

WCTV, a CNN affiliate, reported that no fewer than four people sustained injuries according to hospital authorities. A first responder present at the scene relayed similar information to CNN.

Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare issued a statement to CNN confirming, “We are currently receiving and caring for patients affected by the shooting.” However, “details are still being assessed, and we do not have any specific updates to share at this time.”

Law enforcement sources, referencing early reports, mentioned that the severity of the injuries remains undetermined.

“An active shooter has been reported near the Student Union,” the university communicated via X. “Police are on site or en route. Continue to shelter in place, avoid doors and windows, and be ready to take further protective actions.”

Students Escorted with Their Hands Up

Emily Palmer, a 21-year-old student at Florida State University, found herself near the student union when she was notified of a “dangerous situation” on campus.

“I’m shaking… There’s just a lot happening,” Palmer recounted to CNN from her student housing.

Expressing her concern, she added, “I’m worried about my friends. I’ve got friends in class being evacuated by police with hands raised.”

Joshua Sirmans, a 20-year-old junior, was inside the university’s main library when alarms rang out, signaling an active shooter situation. According to the Associated Press, law enforcement officers led him and other students out with their hands elevated.

FSU’s emergency notification system, FSU Alert, dispatched messages urging campus inhabitants to remain sheltered. “Law enforcement is clearing rooms on the main campus,” informed one message.

Richard Rind, head of transportation and parking at the university, told CNN that he too was sheltered in place as emergency vehicles flooded the campus.

“There are numerous emergency vehicles on site, but we can’t see much because we’re locked down inside a building across the street,” Rind reported to CNN, adding that he heard gunshots and saw people fleeing while the event unfolded Thursday afternoon.

Governor Ron DeSantis expressed his concerns for the university through a post on X, stating, “Our prayers are with the FSU community, and state law enforcement is actively responding.”

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier similarly mentioned that his office was engaged with the situation at FSU’s campus.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
