In the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, seven individuals perished in a devastating helicopter crash, officials have reported. Local media indicated that the aircraft was navigating a well-trodden Hindu pilgrimage path from Kedarnath through the majestic Himalayan mountains. Rescue teams were swiftly deployed to the site, and the recovery of the bodies was conducted in coordination with local authorities. Among the deceased were the pilot and a two-year-old child, as confirmed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, who also announced that the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) would undertake an investigation into the unfortunate incident.

According to India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation, the ill-fated Aryan Aviation Bell 407 helicopter, registered as VT-BKA, embarked on its journey on Sunday shortly after 05:15 local time. Onboard were five passengers, a child, and one crew member, aiming for Guptkashi, another favored destination for pilgrims. “At approximately 05:00, we were alerted to the fact that a helicopter en route from Shri Kedarnath Dham had gone missing,” stated the CEO of Uttarakhand’s Civil Aviation Department. It was subsequently revealed that the helicopter had crashed close to Gaurikund.

In response to the tragedy, the state’s chief minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami, expressed his profound condolences in a post on X, characterizing the incident as “very sad news.” He informed that the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local administration, and other rescue teams were actively involved in relief efforts. Dhami has also commissioned an inquiry to determine the cause of the crash. Kedarnath is among the four sacred temple towns along the Char Dham Yatra pilgrimage circuit. The director-general of information for the state, Bansidhar Tripathi, noted that there had been “three emergency landings and two helicopter crashes within the last month and a half” along this pilgrimage path.

In light of the recent accident, senior officials convened and decided to suspend helicopter services along the pilgrimage route until Monday. Operations would only recommence following consultations with all involved operators and verification of pilots’ experience flying in the challenging Himalayan terrain, according to a statement from Dhami. He also mandated the development of a stringent Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for helicopter flights in the state, establishing a centralized command and coordination hub in Dehradun to enhance safety and operational efficiency. “Any carelessness identified at any level will be thoroughly investigated and dealt with,” Dhami asserted. He further instructed the District Administration of Rudraprayag to reach out to the families of the victims and ensure suitable arrangements were made to return their bodies to their respective states.

Every year, thousands of devotees flock to the four eminent Hindu pilgrimage destinations - Badrinath, Gangotri, Yamunotri, and Kedarnath - nestled in the Himalayas. This steady influx has spurred the growth of helicopter services catering to affluent pilgrims seeking to bypass the strenuous treks to the sacred shrines.
