Trent Alexander-Arnold is poised to exit Liverpool once his contract concludes this upcoming summer, with insiders revealing to ESPN that he turned down a lucrative offer from Anfield which would have placed him among the top-earning full-backs globally. The English star, who is anticipated to make his move to Real Madrid without a transfer fee, shared his decision through a statement on Monday. Back in March, sources informed ESPN that Madrid is confident about securing the signature of Alexander-Arnold, although the deal is yet to be sealed.
Expressing his sentiments, Alexander-Arnold remarked, “This wasn’t an easy choice and I’ve put a lot of reflection and emotion into it.” Having been with Liverpool for 20 years, he cherishes every moment, noting, “I’ve realized all my dreams and ambitions here. I’ve given my all day in and day out for two decades, and now feel ready for a fresh start and new challenges, both on the field and personally. I believe now is the perfect time for this change.”
Beginning his journey with Liverpool at just six years old, Alexander-Arnold sees his current deal end with this season. At 26, the right-back - appointed vice-captain in the summer of 2023 - has graced the field for Liverpool 349 times, securing seven significant trophies along the way. His relocation to Madrid will reunite him with fellow England international Jude Bellingham. ESPN insiders disclosed that contract discussions with Alexander-Arnold began during Jürgen Klopp’s last year steering Liverpool and persisted when Arne Slot took over as coach last summer. Negotiations, led by sporting director Richard Hughes, were described as amicable and productive, with a generous pay bump proposed. However, Liverpool came to terms earlier this year with his decision to part ways, and by last month, Alexander-Arnold had informed Slot of his intentions.
Addressing the fans, Alexander-Arnold conveyed, “There’s a lot I’d like to express. Above all, a heartfelt thank you to the supporters. You’ve stood by me from the beginning, offering unwavering support. I’ve truly felt and cherished all you’ve done.” He continued, hoping the fans recognize his dedication to the club, “I’ve endeavored to reciprocate the love and commitment. My hope is that my departure doesn’t detract from the incredible achievements this season. It’s been phenomenal to experience, and I wish the focus remains on celebrating the team’s accomplishments rather than dwelling on my news for too long.”
