A minor earthquake shook the New York metro area on Saturday night.
According to the US Geological Survey, the quake registered at a 3.0 magnitude. It occurred in Hasbrouck Heights, a New Jersey suburb situated less than 8 miles west of Central Park, with a depth of approximately 6.2 miles.
One Brooklyn resident described the jolt as a brief and gentle swaying.
Still, social media buzzed with reports from those who sensed the earth’s slight movement. The Empire State Building’s official account humorously confirmed on the platform X, “I AM FINE.”
This tremor was significantly weaker than the 4.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Tewksbury, New Jersey, in 2024, located further west of the city.
Generally, a 3.0 magnitude earthquake is not powerful enough to cause damage, though such mild tremors are somewhat uncommon in the Northeast.
New York City Emergency Management reported no immediate significant impacts from the event.
