The Portland Timbers are gearing up for an exciting face-off against Club Querétaro in their second match of this year’s Leagues Cup. This encounter marks a unique milestone as it is the first time Los Gallos Blancos will meet the Timbers. The match will take place at Providence Park in Portland, a city with personal significance for the club’s new owner, Marc Spiegel.

Spiegel, who is the chairman of Innovatio Capital, recently became part of history by leading the first American investment group to hold a majority stake in a Liga MX club. A devoted fan of the Trail Blazers since childhood, Spiegel is thrilled to bring his team to Portland, a city he has admired for years due to his love for basketball and sports culture.

“We’ve chosen Liga MX as our starting point and have big plans for improving Querétaro, both on and off the field,” Spiegel shared.

According to Forbes, Querétaro was acquired for over $120 million, and Spiegel sees it as a promising business and sports venture. He acknowledges that the club demands immediate focus to enhance its competitive edge.

“This is an investment beyond business; it revolves around football. Our priority is to align with our football goals,” the Kentucky-born Spiegel emphasized.

Facing challenges, Querétaro has struggled in previous matches, including a rocky start in the Torneo Apertura. Spiegel is well aware of the current hurdles.

“Fans want to rally behind winning teams, but we haven’t yet achieved that this year. No excuses—we must improve,” He candidly expressed. “You must learn to win before expecting victory. This mentality shift is crucial.”

Spiegel’s determination to ignite change is evident as he hints at impending roster and structural changes.

“We desire a squad full of driven players who aim to excel, whether with us or elsewhere, domestically or internationally,” Spiegel added.

Interestingly, this isn’t Querétaro’s first connection with Oregon. In 2024, Beaverton native and Guatemalan national team striker Rubio Rubín joined the team on loan.

Spiegel is also focused on modernizing Querétaro’s home stadium, La Corregidora, believing that enhancing the fan experience is vital for the club’s growth.

“Modernization is key,” Spiegel noted about the stadium’s condition. “I was surprised there was no scoreboard during my first visit. Improving aspects like food, beverages, and entertainment is crucial.”

While Querétaro continues its U.S. tour with the Leagues Cup, Spiegel is adapting to his new role. The warm reception from Mexican fans has made a lasting impression.

“I’ve been welcomed warmly,” Spiegel said about his time in Querétaro. “The hospitality has been overwhelming, from hugs to open arms, we’ve felt incredibly accepted—both locally and within the league.”
