Matt Carty delivered a memorable performance during the second round of the Masters Tournament on Friday, catapulting himself into contention after a solid first-round score of 71 in his inaugural appearance at Augusta National Golf Club.

Carty’s round initially seemed bleak, starting with a double bogey on the first hole and another bogey on the par-5 second. However, his fortune began to change with a crucial birdie on an 8-foot putt at the sixth hole. This momentum carried over as he birdied the final four holes of the front nine, featuring a remarkable 28-foot putt on the seventh.

The excitement continued as Carty birdied the par-3 12th hole, followed by additional birdies on the 13th from eight feet, and another on the 15th with a simple tap-in. He further solidified his position with a birdie on the 17th, concluding the day at 6-under par for the tournament.

At 27 years old, the left-handed golfer from Scottsdale, Arizona, has shown tremendous growth since his college days at Santa Clara. His rapid development was evident as he succeeded on the Korn Ferry Tour, winning three tournaments in 2024 and becoming the 13th player to secure a PGA Tour promotion by doing so in just one year. Carty was named Korn Ferry Tour Player of the Year in 2024. His entry into the Masters came after his victory at the PGA Tour’s Black Desert Championship, where he finished with an impressive 23-under-par 261, highlighted by an extraordinary 62 in the first round.

This season, Carty achieved a tie for 20th place in the 2025 Players Championship and successfully made the cut in seven out of ten events. Additionally, he boasts a win at the 2021 Wyoming State Open.

Carty’s camaraderie with his caddie, Devrath Des, adds a fun element to his game. A humorous incident during a Korn Ferry Tour event in Sarasota saw Carty drop his wedge onto his ball, resulting in a penalty. Des humorously suggested stamping “Butter Fingers” on the wedge as a reminder, and since that day, Carty hasn’t dropped his club again.”
